Yesterday I was in yoga class and got the "wild hair" to paint my entryway. I have been slowly going through the house repainting all of the high traffic areas and that entryway has been taunting me. Our house was painted in contractor's grade flat paint and is so unforgiving when I try to clean scuff marks and finger prints. I keep a paint bucket on hand for just such moments, because I really need to be in the mood to paint. Suffice it to say, my blog post didn't happen. I got busy listening to a recorded zoom meeting of a collaboration of area non-profits. It was such fun and so educational! I admit to getting "sucked" in and loving every minute!
This morning I talked my husband into a date morning at the Columbia Farmer's Market. He was amenable, even though crowds aren't his thing. Today was the big Spring Kickoff Day and I was not the only one interested in checking out the market. There was even a scavenger hunt running for the kiddos this morning! I was so impressed by the available offerings and plan to keep certain vendors in mind. I love using local honey in my tea and oatmeal because of the allergy help afforded by the local pollen.
I was impressed by the programs in place to encourage low income families to purchase food at the Farmer's Market! There are multiple grants in place that offer "tokens" which are redeemable for even more food. If a family on SNAP spends $60 at the Farmer's Market, they will get over $100 worth of tokens to be used on more food purchases! The level of quality at our particular market is amazing. I saw everything from veggies to honey to meats. There were even fun food trucks and local bakeries in attendance.
We purchased a huge round of Sourdough bread that reminded my husband of his time spent in Germany as a military "brat". He was so excited to pair it with meats and cheese at home for lunch; that is the story of how I weaseled out of making meals today. I also found a package of beef jerky to go in my son's Easter basket. I plan to visit again and visit often!
Here is a great video about the SNAP matching programs for folks in my area.
