The Universal Language of Sports

Today I had a conversation with ladies in the office and the subject of sports arose.  Sports and music are such universal languages!  My husband has fond memories of playing "street" basketball with kids in the inner city of Chicago.  Sports was never my jam (in spite of extraordinary efforts on my part) but music certainly was.  I do love to watch the engagement of players and I admire the hard work that goes into each team participating in games.

Soccer and volleyball are widely known and loved across the globe.  It is a healthy activity and it encourages sportsmanship, character and unity.  A group of children can play together and, suddenly, a team play, or even a win, can unite them into a cohesive unit.  Race, color or creed melts away when there is a common goal; divisiveness has no place on the court or field if the team wants to emerge triumphant.

We are just now making friends in the new Afghan refugee community, but I've been told that one area in Afghanistan loves soccer and the other area loves volleyball.  Many of our other friends also love soccer and are so excited to participate in their favorite sport, even if it is in a new country.

One of my favorite things about this job (and there are so many) is that I get to hear about all of the amazing people and organizations helping the people of mid-Missouri.  Here is what our fabulous social media queen, Jesse, recently posted on the City of Refuge Facebook page.

Huge thanks to Sporting Columbia SC for their scholarship program that is allowing our children, in multiple age groups, to participate in the spring recreational soccer season! ⚽️
Sporting Columbia's goal is to create opportunities for all kids to play soccer, and they are working to see this partnership with City of Refuge continue to grow and expand in the future to make that possible.
Here are some pictures from the soccer camp Sporting Columbia helped to sponsor last summer!

And of some have compassion, making a difference: Jude 1:22 KJV
