A Day in the Life

Every week I have the goal of publishing at least one tutorial for our refugee families.  The topics cover anything from tax time prep to container gardens.  If there is a financial literacy aspect, I can create one.  One of my latest ones is about the culture in America.  On a great website I was browsing through topics when I stumbled across an informational list for refugees about American culture.  It was my "ah ha" moment and a baby tutorial was born.

Today I have writer's block so I thought that I would share my lesson about culture.  My hope is to eventually translate it into the languages that a large percentage of our friends speak (for our friends from Afghanistan, Burma, Congo and more).  My next project is to collaborate with the police department to tweak my "police etiquette" lesson.  Did you know that there are different rules to follow in each country?  In some African nations, if you are stopped by the police officer, you must get out of your car and walk to the police car.  As you can imagine, that almost created a tragic story in the not so recent past.  If I can save one refugee from having an unfortunate incident, I would consider my service as a VISTA a success.  My goal is to provide the help that our friends need as they navigate this new culture.
