The “snow-pocalypse” hit and our roads are covered with snow! One of my favorite parts of being a
VISTA is that it is easy to work from home. I love how supportive the VISTA program is about keeping
us safe and healthy.
My VISTA supervisor periodically reminds us that we can work from home (depending on what work we
do) during COVID peaks. My place of service is also very supportive! During our “state of emergency”
this week in Missouri, the City of Refuge was closed to keep everyone safe and at home. During peaks of
Omicron, we were encouraged to stay home to keep healthy (or recover).
So…what does this VISTA do at home? I have this cute little desk on wheels; it is left from my time of
teaching online during the early morning hours. I can wheel it to a sunny, warm spot in my home. The
hubby is working from home in another room and I like to keep some distance so I don’t vicariously
participate in his zoom meetings. LOL! My snappy little green chair has back support and is easily stored.
It was also a leftover of my online teaching days.
Today I tweaked and worked on a tutorial about how to sign up for a gmail account. I couldn’t help myself
and had to add a few sections about email safety. Since I started working for City of Refuge, I have had
fun learning about how to create google slides, voice overs and more! I have tutorials about how to shop
at Aldi, what documents you need for tax time, how to safely use a space heater, and more. I try to listen
to what other staff members spend the most time doing with the refugees. If I can speed things up and
build capacity with a certain lesson, it will free up the staff to help our friends with more personalized
problems.
I do have to admit that I feel a certain amount of satisfaction when I see my growing file of tutorials.
I have fun posting them on FB for our refugee friends and volunteers. My hope is that someday we will be
able to embed the tutorials into our website so that they are more accessible to the people we serve.
