Happy National Americorps Week

This week is National Americorps Week; we get to celebrate the impact of our programs and offer thanks to each person who volunteers to serve others.  In honor of this celebration, the KC Chamber of Commerce hosted a luncheon of amazing food from KC Burgers.  The food looked and smelled fabulous!  Jessica, the VISTA serving at the KC Chamber of Commerce, told me that the cookies on each table were even made by an immigrant.  I took pictures because the cookies were so well done and looked delicious.

My supervisor and friend, Candace, and I drove down to Kansas City (girls' road trip) for the event. It was so fun to have her company; the drive seemed much shorter with conversation.  We took the opportunity to have our one-on-one in the car but then still had plenty of time to chat and get to know each other better.  I daily count my blessings for her friendship and guidance.

I am continually impressed by the quality of the other VISTAs when I attend meetings.  I love to hear them talk about their place of service, as well as their field of service.  We loved sharing a table with  Jamie and hearing him talk about Kanbes Market.  How fun to have my two worlds intersect as we exchanged invitations to visit each other at work.  I do hope that I am able to visit and see how Kanbes Market impacts the food deserts of Kansas City.  I love to hear about nonprofits helping each other succeed!

The program was very inspirational and full of interesting presentations.  We heard an excellent presentation about the Welcoming KC program, and then one of my fellow VISTAs performed a musical number from his album.  I loved hearing some of the "behind the scenes" Americorps staff share their stories.  I had no idea that Americorps was also a dating service and source of potential romance!  Thankfully I have found my true love and won't need to avail myself of these opportunities.

As if it couldn't get any better, Amy had fun swag for us in the form of t-shirts, tote bags, certificates and even one of Jack's albums!  We even had several photo opportunities on the stage and again in the hallway with an Americorps backdrop.

And of some have compassion, making a difference: Jude 1:22 KJV
